Thirty years ago, in January of 1990, purges of the Armenians were ordered in Baku, claiming the lives of hundreds of Armenians; many were injured, subjected to tortures, were expelled, some were lost without a trace. After the pogroms, Baku, which had had the Armenian population of 250,000, was totally purged of Armenians.

Osip Mandelstam about Shushi

The famous Russian poet Osip Mandelstam was in Shushi 11 years after massacres in Shushi, in 1931, saw a horrible picture of “forty thousand lifeless windows which are visible there from all sides” and wrote a poem called “The phaeton driver” dedicated to this tragedy. A little-known “early late” Osip Mandelshtam poem (1931) that marks his return to poetry after more than half a decade of writing prose and prose only.
