On December 29, 2020, the leaders of 6 different local confessions, including the Russian and Catholic churches, in Azerbaijan wrote and published one of the most vile appeals in history.
Here are quotes from their large text, addressed to president Ilham Aliyev:
«… The victorious Patriotic war, which you led as Supreme commander-in-chief in the direction of restoring historical justice — liberating the ancestral Azerbaijani lands from occupation, personifies faith in justice, the triumph of truth. We are proud that the author of this victory is the great son of the Azerbaijani people, the wise and decisive head of our state, His Excellency Mr. Ilham Aliyev, who gave all citizens, regardless of language and religion, an unforgettable sense of pride. An active, confident policy based on deep intellect and iron logic, pursued by you on a global scale as a victorious commander, relying on the strength of the Azerbaijani army, the inviolable solidarity and will of the Azerbaijani people, the unity of the state and people, ensured the absolute victory of the just cause of Azerbaijan.
… Your Excellency, under your leadership, multicultural Azerbaijan, loyal to universal human values, won a victory over mono-ethnic Armenia, which justified fascism and vandalism.
… The whole world testifies that you and Mehriban khanim (wife of Aliyev) are the keepers of high spiritual values, that Christian and Jewish religious monuments in Azerbaijan are traditionally treated with attention and care. Your attentive attitude to Christian and Jewish religious and spiritual monuments, along with mosques, in the liberated territories is another confirmation of Azerbaijan’s tolerant image in the world, its adherence to the highest spiritual values, its leading role in the process of cooperation in the field of culture, intercivilizational and interreligious dialogue.
… Your Excellency, as religious leaders, it is especially valuable for us to celebrate your actions, which are of great importance from a spiritual point of view.
… On behalf of the communities that we represent, as leaders of religious confessions, we express our deep gratitude for your worthy work at home and at the international level, we ask the Almighty to send down blessings in all your deeds. We always pray for your excellency!»
