On March 23, 1920, in the Karabakh city of Shushi, a massacre of the Armenian civilian population was organized and carried out by the so-called Azerbaijan Democratic Republic. Let’s not again stir up the minds and souls of readers with the horrors of the atrocities committed by the Caucasian Tatars (hereinafter called Azerbaijanis). Let us only note that the consequences of these fanatics were very figuratively described by famous Russian poet Osip Mandelstam in his poem “The Phaeton driver”, who had experienced “fears common to the soul” in a city torn apart by predators with “forty thousand lifeless windows.”
It is unambiguous that the massacre of the Armenian population of the city of Shushi and the arson of the once flourishing city and an important cultural center of Transcaucasia pursued the goal of expelling the indigenous population from the city and the region as a whole and establishing the bloody domination of an alien (Turkish and Azerbaijani) element in Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh). Experts regard this policy of ethnic cleansing as a continuation of the Turkish policy of Armenocide and Turkey’s expansion in the Caucasus.
Alas, the lack of a proper political and legal assessment on the part of the world community of another crime against humanity has completely untied the hands of the Azerbaijani-Turkish tandem. The legal successor of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic – the present Azerbaijan Republic, among other things, also inherited the criminal policy of its predecessor.
Evidence of this are the pogroms and forced displacement of the Armenians of Azerbaijan in the late 1980s and early 1990s (massacres in Sumgait, Baku, Kirovabad, etc.), the blockade, shelling and bombing of peaceful Karabakh cities and villages, and then the outbreak of a large-scale war against self-determined Artsakh in 1991-1994, regular gross violations of an indefinite ceasefire agreement, which resulted in April 2016, with the explicit support of Turkey, in a bloody “four-day war” involving numerous terrorist mercenaries, obstruction of the peace process and pressure at the state level Armenianophobic sentiments in Azerbaijani society…
As a result of the recent unprecedented aggression of Azerbaijan, Turkey and international terrorism against small Artsakh, the city of Shushi, the historical cultural center of the local Armenians, again came under the control of Azerbaijan. Obviously, the Baku regime will make every effort to destroy the Christian heritage of Shushi, as was done earlier, for example, in the once Armenian Nakhichevan … Alas, today there are many facts to confirm this.
The international and regional community, finally, must strictly and concretely condemn the anti-Armenian and generally anti-human actions of Azerbaijan that have been going on for decades, force the dictatorial Baku regime and its patron Erdogan to admit their deeds and bear responsibility. This is the only way to keep these barbarians in power from the policy of terror and ethnic cleansing, which threaten to destroy the security system of the entire South Caucasus.
