… It happened (in 1990) that in the fourth most populated city (Baku) in the country (USSR) for a week, not humans but human like wild monkeys took power. They killed people, children, old people, women, they threw people out of windows into bonfires made from their own furniture. The police fled away, few military garrisons in the city were besieged and starving, they were required to give up weapons – it was not very effective to kill people with axes and knives. They killed mostly Armenians, less Russians, but Russians were promised “wait, we will deal with you, Russians, later.”
… What now thirty years later? No normal investigation was carried out, and who would have conducted it.
… (Now) the president himself (Ilham Aliyev), for example, states that there were no pogroms of Sumgayit (preceding Baku, being its rehearsal), that they were minor incidents arranged by specially brought in Armenian provocateurs. They talk about Baku in the same manner. There, now generally, history is being taught absurdly: Azerbaijan, which was essentially created by the Bolsheviks, is considered the oldest country in the world, Azerbaijani scientists taught Columbus how to find America, and Armenians are “genetic” (!) enemies of the Turks. A new generation is being raised in lies and hatred. An elderly local writer Akram Aylisli, who wrote a novel about pogroms, became an enemy of own nation, a pro-government faction in parliament announced a prize to someone who would bring his ears cut off.
… Let burn in hell everyone who organized it and could, but did not help.
